MYOPIA MANAGEMENT
Myopia Management is a way to slow the progression of a child’s short-sightedness using specialist contact lenses or spectacle lenses.
With the increasing prevalence of myopia around the world, particularly among children, it is crucial to manage and slow its progression to protect long-term vision health.

What is Myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is a common vision disorder that causes distant objects appear blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. This occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back or when the cornea is too curved. This causes light entering the eye to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Children with one or both myopic parents are more likely to develop myopia. Environmental factors such as prolonged near work (reading, screen time) and insufficient time spent outdoors also play significant roles. Studies suggest that increased time outdoors can reduce the risk of developing myopia.
The prevalence of myopia is rising at an alarming rate globally. Currently, about 30% of the world’s population is myopic, and this figure is projected to increase to 50% by 2050, affecting nearly 5 billion people. High myopia, which can lead to severe vision impairment and eye health issues, is also expected to rise significantly, potentially affecting 10% of the global population by mid-century.

Treatment Options
At P&A Eyecare we currently offer two different treatment options for the management of myopia, either soft daily disposable contact lenses (MiSight) worn during the day or a specialist spectacle lens (MyoCare) for those who do not wish to go down the contact lens route.

MiSight 1 day daily disposable lenses are one of the ways to control myopia. This soft contact lens is suitable for children and we take a pro-active approach to help provide a successful fitting. Once fitted the lenses have to be worn regularly.

MyoCare lenses are highly effective spectacle lenses developed by Carl Zeiss with the principal aim of slowing myopia progression. Rooted in the innovative technology of Zeiss and furnished with over a decade of experience in developing myopia management solutions, Zeiss MyoCare is designed to provide superior vision care.

Fees
MiSight 1 day lens fitting cost : £115.00 (includes consultation, teaching insertion and removal, 1 week follow up and a trial of MiSight 1 day contact lenses to try for comfort and suitability).
MiSight monthly fee: £50.50 per month (includes a regular supply of MiSight 1 day contact lenses and regular contact lens checkups).

Zeiss MyoCare lenses are available in both standard and high index materials to suit a wide range of prescriptions. They are priced from £270.00 per pair or £22.50 per month for twelve months.
Why Choose P&A Eyecare For Your Child's Myopia Control?
Our practice owner James is a spectacle wearer whose Myopia rapidly progressed during his teenage years.

I was unfortunate that despite having opticians for parents, the myopia treatment options available today weren't available when I was a child.

My personal experience has motivated me to want to educate as many parents as possible about myopia and the benefits of managing its progression in children.
Alongside myself, my team of Optometrists and Opticians stay up to date with the latest myopia control treatments and technologies to provide the best advice we can.
